Internal Yoga

Internal Yoga

As per the yoga sutras’ definition of yoga, “Yogas chitta vritti nirodah”, translated as “Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.” It implies that when the mind is still, the state of yoga is attained.

The definition of the eight-limbed path that leads to yoga is found in ‘Book 2’ of the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali. In ‘Sadhana Pada’, the chapter on yoga practice, Sutra 2.29 states: “Yama-niyama-asana-pranayama-pratyahara-dharana-dyana-samadhyaya-astavangani.” Translated as: “The eight limbs of yoga are yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.”

The eight limbs form a sequence leading from the outer to the inner. Antarang yoga or internal yoga focuses on three limbs – dharana, dhyana and samadhi.

Dharana: Collection or concentration of mind

Dhayana: Sustained concentration or constant state of awareness

Samadhi: Absolute awareness

Internal yoga includes certain practices such as – yoga nidra, prana vidya and chakra sadhana.

Yoga nidra or ‘yogic sleep’ is a state of consciousness that dwells between waking and sleeping. It is typically induced by a guided meditation.

Prana vidya is the study and practice of increasing the life force that flows within all of us and brings us to a peaceful state.

Chakra sadhana is an in-depth study of the internal stimulation and purification of the chakras – the psychic energy centers located in the body along the spine.

One of the goals of internal yoga is to achieve a tranquil mind; and create a sense of wellbeing, relaxation, improved self confidence, increased efficiency and attentiveness. Internal yogic practices generate a balanced energy which is essential for the optimal functioning of the immune system.

It is also essential in regulating and inhibiting the areas responsible for fear, aggressiveness and rage; and stimulates the rewarding pleasure centers in the median forebrain and other areas, leading to a state of bliss and pleasure.
